The Perfect Summer Cold Brew at Home
Cold Brew · Summer 2026 · Method
Cold brew is not just iced coffee. It is something else entirely — smooth, low-acid, naturally sweet. When single origin arabica steeps slowly in cold water over 8 to 12 hours, it gives up its best qualities without any of the bitterness that heat can coax out. The result is a cup that tastes like the coffee actually meant to taste.
In summer, it is the only thing worth drinking. And there is absolutely no reason to spend €5–7 a cup to get it from a café when you can make a litre of superior quality cold brew at home, overnight, with almost zero effort.
€6 a cup
or one bottle, one morning, one month of summer.
What you need
The Hario Filter-In Bottle was designed in Japan for exactly this. A beautifully simple cold brew maker — a glass bottle with a fine mesh filter insert. You put coarsely ground coffee into the filter, fill the bottle with cold water, and place it in the fridge. Twelve hours later, remove the filter and serve. No paper filters, no dripping, no mess. Nothing to master.
Pair it with any single origin arabica from our current selection — ground coarse, as you would for a French press — and you have everything you need.
The method
FIVE STEPS. ONE OVERNIGHT WAIT.
01 — Grind coarsely
Use 60g of coarsely ground single origin arabica per 700ml of cold water. Think sea salt, not fine sand. A coarse grind prevents over-extraction and bitterness.
02 — Fill the filter
Spoon the ground coffee into the Hario's inner mesh filter and set it inside the bottle. No paper filter needed — the mesh does the work.
03 — Add cold water
Fill the bottle with cold, filtered water. Gently swirl once to saturate all the grounds. Seal the lid.
04 — Steep overnight
Place the sealed bottle in your fridge. Leave for 8–12 hours. Overnight is ideal. Do not rush this. Cold brew rewards patience.
05 — Remove & serve
Pull out the filter and discard the spent grounds. Your cold brew is ready. Serve over ice, straight, or with a small splash of water if you prefer it lighter. Keeps in the fridge for up to two weeks.
What a summer of cold brew actually costs you
A takeaway cold brew in most cafés costs €5–7 per cup. Drink one every few days through summer and you're spending €150–200 before September. With the Hario Filter-In Bottle and a quality selection of single origin arabica, you are spending a fraction of that — per cup, per month, per entire season.
The numbers
| Takeaway cold brew (per cup) | |
| Takeaway cold brew (per summer, 3× per week) | |
| Hario Filter-In Bottle (one-time) | €35 |
| Single origin arabica per 700ml batch | ~€2.80 |
| Your cost per cup at home | ≈ €0.80 |
The bottle pays for itself inside the first two weeks. Everything after that is just excellent coffee, on your schedule, made the way you want it.
A note on the coffee itself
Cold brew is unforgiving of mediocre coffee. The slow, cold extraction reveals exactly what is in the cup — nothing is hidden. A single origin arabica, traceable to a specific farm or region, will reward you with clarity and character that commodity coffee simply cannot offer. You will taste the actual coffee, not just the process.
We select our coffees specifically because they are worth tasting in their purest form. Cold brew is one of the best ways to experience that.
